The problem isn't all with Windows OS, it is with how big the target is. Currently Windows OS fills about 75% of the worlds computers, business and personal. Linux fills less than 2% and Apple about 16%. Virtually 100% of business computers run some version of Windows, well actually around 92%. There are some exceptions such as newspapers and people who do graphics/photo editing. Servers, routers and NAS are some others that run implement specific OS's. If Linux was installed in 75% of computers it would also be the biggest and easiest target to hit. If you were writing code to steal "generic" anything from a computer you would also write it for Windows, unless you had a specific target that ran Apple or Linux. If someone were to develop a new ultra secure system that would run all your business apps, it wouldn't take long and government sponsored hackers would get into them. Either online or by physically accessing the computers. An example, how hard would it be for someone to go to some small clinic, show what appears to be valid ID and get access to their server.

Every OS will have some vulnerability as long as it has internet access. There is a fine line between "ease of use" and security. If the OS/computer is too secure it makes it more difficult to use and all of us are all about easy.

There isn't much we can do on our own to prevent a determined hacker from accessing our personal computers, but any financial or healthcare website should require double verification. Problem is if you lose your phone or it is stolen, that is where the second verification is usually sent.

Market share by OS
