Wyoming | No. ReactOS is seeking to duplicate Windows, including driver compatibility. It's just another effort to get Windows software to run and not pay Microsoft for their crappy OS.
A secure OS would offer a Win32/etc API for user-mode applications, but the drivers and driver/kernel API would be better and more secure than Windows. Drivers, by virtue of their ability to run in privileged mode, should be signed and be able to be trusted and have what is in effect a "chain of custody" before installation.
My idea of a secure OS would also not be written in C/C++/C#/whatever-C. We need to get away from the C-influenced model of software, and get back to an idea of compilers helping enforce reliability and security. We decided somewhere along the way that we don't like compilers that enforce strict data typing, bounds checking, etc. Well, it's time to admit that the cowboy era of programming is over for systems that handle private/secure/classified/high-reliability issues, and start using languages that treat programmers as hardened criminals. My vote is for Ada. |
