I think the part you might be missing is that college would not be this expensive if it wasn't for the government assistance. Schools would be forced to align their tuition costs with predicted income in the chosen fields.
No, I agree completely that costs have been inflated because the consumer wasn't paying the bill. I just don't think it's that much different than land, or housing, or other subsidized industries. Except that student loans are mostly not able to be discharged in bankruptcy like other debt, and therefore the risk to naive borrowers is much greater.
