Here is some information. The corn was planted green into a rye cover crop on 5/1, the rye was burned down on 5/22 after the corn had emerged, there was a residual applied with the burn down. Now the plant that i showed in the picture i determined it was planted 1.5 inches deep, the target depth was 2.75 inches. A plant that i dug up next to the one in the picture showed a 2.25 planting depth see picture one. When i dug the plants up i could not find a compaction layer, and there was moisture clear up to the soil surface, with no dry layers. I think the hybrid is probably a more of a horizontal root system, that why the roots might look like that along with a shallower planting depth. The area where i dug them up the seed slot was closed with no cracks visible. I was informed by the renter that he split the planter with two different hybrids so now i can determine if the two have different root systems. I will keep you informed as i do more checking.
