This is the second year in a row I have harvested triticale 3 inches pre boot to fit the harvest window I was given here. Both times protien was in the 13 percent range. It was in the 2000s and early 2010s I could harvest rye or triticale at the same stage of development and expect a minimum of 15 % protien. Tried boosting the nitrogen this year to maybe help. Got more tonnage which was a plus but quality didn't improve much. Somewhat blaming it on the cooler springs the last two years and a little more clouds. Has anyone else experienced the same phenomenom?
Triticale should be better protein in forage cutting than rye grain.
If you are fall seeding the trit then that's likely your best bet for that scenario.
If you are spring seeding then I would suggest oats.
If you have enough moisture and groceries oats can get you even better protein numbers but that would depend upon both conditions and variety (as always - - - mother nature bats last and all too often she's playing cleanup!!) |
