What firmware do you have on the radios?  Are you running old firmware on the original radios?  I've had issues in the past trying to complete links when firmware versions are way off.  I'm sure there is a document somewhere that has details but I'm not finding it now.  I'd recommend updating to the latest.  Setting are retained when updating firmware.
