I was on the buyers side until you said he didn’t look at them. Often they’ll have a price slide to a point with a stop where anything above is free to protect the buyer max per head. And you didn’t say where they were weighed at, if it was off truck how did he even know what to write the check for? If it was fob any adjustments should have been agreed on before trucks hit the road. Without looking he didn’t represent them very well to his buyer, who I’d guess he deals with more than you. I think you’d legally be right to cash the check but you might have a hard time getting a bid on farm next time. See if you can get reverse slide next time, it doesn’t hurt to ask. I’ve seen it on calves. Get something in writing and insist he look at the cattle before pricing him anything again, and don’t let him forget YOU got HIM out of a tight spot with his buyer.
