I switched over some 1000's several years ago, just changed out all the valves and popoff, had a little smell of NH3, only have used it for the dryer so I don't think it is an issue, I personally would not want to use one for a heating system like a shop or house at least not until you have ran several tanks of propane through it to flush out the smell.
