Sioux Center, Iowa | We got away from cover crops for alfalfa. Too much fertility in this area makes it nearly impossible to get oats harvested even as a silage without it lodging and causing damage to the hay stand in the process. We've gone to just direct seeding the hay. This way we get 3 cuttings of hay vs 2 plus the oats. We're in a position to chop the hay for forage, so any weeds get turned into feed pronto. | |
