| I work a full time job and have for the last 18 years plus farmed with dad till he retired last year. Do it for several reasons.
1. It is a steady income that does not rely on mother nature
2. health insurance for me and my kids (this is really the #1 reason)
3. Allows me to reinvest money made on the farm back into the farm to make i more efficient in hopes that someday I can make it farming alone
Those are my main reasons and I still do it today. I am blessed with a real good job and benefits for my area. also have the help of my dad now and relation during the busy times like harvest. It does come with its downside also. All my vacation time from work is spent working on the farm, same goes with weekends and stuff like that. Winter is nice as I have weekends to myself but that is it as I have no vacation to go anywhere for a few days. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining as this is the life I chose for now and the schedule I decided to keep. But if one likes to and wants to farm this is how I am able to do it for now in hopes someday it can be able to do it with out the job. I have no livestock which is another alternative but it would take a lot of cattle to make up for what I make in wages and insurance at my full time job. oh one more thing.
4. with the busy schedule it keeps me out of the bars! | |
