| There is a lot of good replies on this thread and I am in the boat with most of them. I don't have enough ground to cover insurance and all the other things that come with a family. So I work in the city for 40+ hours/week (I am a maintenance manger). I could sell the farm and move to Sioux City and live like a king with no worries, BY the way the farm has been profitable and efficient for 10 years in a row. (for all the BTO's who like to espouse efficiency).
The reasons I work 40+ hours/week and still attempt to farm :
1. I have the ability to make much more money at public work than my wife. I would have no trouble being a house husband if the opportunity presented itself.
2. We have two kids under 9 years olds. Doing chores and having responsibilities on the farm keeps them occupied and out of trouble.
3. Building net worth. I will be eligible to retire in only 9 years with my ground paid for. So if I can retire and my wife and I only pay the federal employee rates for insurance for life and I am setting on a decent operation then I will spend my last 20 or so years doing what I love and being profitable.
4. I built something, however it had to be done. I started from scratch. No one willed ort left me a farm. My wife and I moved to Iowa, bought this farm, and paid for it anyway we could. Anybody that thinks a farmer that works in town is not worth being a farmer or is automatically neglecting his operation because he works in town is an idiot.
