UP / Thumb of Michigan | I'm not going to say that they positively do anything, one way or the other. I do have them on our motorcycles. Can't hurt.
I have a friend that has a bunch of trucks on the road hauling mail. Quite a few years back, he had 2 of them running through the UP, from Saginaw to Ironwood. Has more than that based in the UP now. Anyway, he could tell you to the nearest dime what an encounter with a deer and a KW averaged. Seems like it was $1832 avg at the time. He spent way, way more on fixing damaged hoods than he thought prudent one year, was ready to put guards on. Driver suggested the whistles. Buddy thought they were a joke, but figured it'd be worth a shot. Deer/truck problems stopped. Buddies impressed, puts them on the other 100 trucks. 6 months later, the UP trucks start swatting deer again. Buddies mad, thinks he's been duped. Confronts the driver that suggested them in the first place, tells him the whistles don't work. Driver asked if they'd been cleaned out, bugs plug them up. Cleaned them out, quit hitting deer.
Haven't talked to the guy about the whistles lately, last time they did come up in conversation he still felt they were OK. I think he still might have put guards on the front of the KW's that run in deer country. Seems like the last time I was in the UP I met one of his trucks that had something different on the front. As mentioned, deer aren't real bright when they don't have lovin on their mind. More stupid now if that is possible. | |
