SOILcattleman - 11/19/2009 19:38 Probably the wrong forum but here goes, I am wanting to build a building with a loft in it for my kids for a 4-H building. The problem is I want to pour pillars for the posts but how do you keep them from settling unevenly? Its going to be 25 by 30, also what would you use for joists to support the weight of the hay in the loft? THANKS

That's a pretty good width . . .  you may look at dairy type barns for ideas. Most widths on dairy barns have support columes, supporting a 8x8 beam, under the loft about every 6ft and loft supported every 8ft in width for the isles. There are a couple different pole type barn designs that allow lofting or hay storage above with 8ft isles. The weight above makes a difference in footers need for the post or poles. As suggested by others, check with some pole barn mfg's in your area or compatent lumber yards that are associated with some engineering company .  . . .
