| I have planted beans in 7 1/2", 15", 20",30" & 36" rows. Hard to believe but the best beans I have ever raised were in 36" rows & using a public variet back in the mid '70s. The last few years we have experimented with 15" & 30" rows & couldn't see enough yield difference in either width, one year 15s would be better & another year 30s would be better. Our test plot beans are in 30" rows and they usually outyield our narrower rows but the plot is usually planted earlier.
This year we went to 20s , corn & beans, and our bean yields seem to be doing the same as neighbors in drilled, 15s & 30s. We did save a little in seed as we reduced populations a little (140,000 compared to 155,000 in 15s) Nprmally run about 127,000 in 30s
