The best way we can make protein in dark northern spring wheat is with fertilizer the fall before, then a good shot with the drill at seeding then streaming some more with herbicide and finishing it with a shot at flag leaf. In 14 inch rain belt we usually run 120-140 lbs of n plus 20 pounds sulfur. Usually yields 50-60 bushels if we get the top side of the yield protein starts to suffer.
