I'm not opposed to a software upgrade/migration, but (as you well know, I'm sure), there's a massive can of worms to go along with that.
I like the front-end interface and features of phpBB3, but in my experience administrating it is a real PITA. My wife runs a forum with over 1000 users, and she drags me into the technical administration side of things now and again. I dread it. A simple thing like changing the background color takes way too much effort. But that's me. And quite possibly, were I to do it more, the phpBB way would begin to make more sense.
It takes practice getting used to... I admin over 200 phpBB boards, and 300 SMF boards - didn't even hear of this software before NAT!
vBulletin is always the king of forum software, but it costs $200 or so.
