I think you are on to something with using the insecticide hoppers, "if" you think you're going to have a slug problem. But you usually don't know. In France, where they have slugs almost every year, they have a special slug bait hopper with a tube running down to past the closing wheels so the bait is right there on top of the row.
Also, I tried the N application again this year on sweet corn- 10 gal 27% plus 10 gal water- very little burn.
