Perry County, 35 miles NW of Harrisburg, PA | Martin and everyone else,
Please take this for what it is worth, I must disagree with the farmer you talked to.
Have 3 fields of no-till corn that had excessive residue from last year's barley harvest and excessive strawy horse manure which I applied too heavily. This created slug HEAVEN!!!! The corn especially in last year's straw windrows was being eaten to NOTHING by slugs. I counted as much as 13 slugs per every 6 - 8 inch corn plant.
3 weeks ago I decided to declare war on slugs. I loaded nitrogen and water into the sprayer so that I had 4 gals. of nitrogen and 11 gals. of water per acre. I waited until after 8 PM on one of our very common clouldy damp days and off to the field I went. Slugs were out in force eating away. Results were stunning. Went back the next night at the same time and could only count 1 - 2 slugs per plant. I FRIED their little a$$es. Me - 1 Slugs - 0 .
So, based on this one time application on 20 acres, a nitrogen application CAN be an effective weapon on our war on slugs. Within 4 days the fields were looking better and it is really surprising how much they have caught up to the rest of the fields.
