The whole discussion about conducting BSE in bulls being the next step of stupidity, I found that condescending. In the situation you’re discussing then yes, by all means pelvic measure, but I’d argue that buying unknown heifers for breeding is always a bad idea. Buying heifers with reputation backing is the only way I’d do it, buying random heifers and expecting them to get by is a recipe for train wreck. Using cheap bulls is a recipe for train wreck too. Doesn’t matter if you run 20 cows, I’d argue a minimum of $5,000 is a great investment (unless you know the EPDs, lineage, and performance of one and can can get a deal on a surefire one). If I was using random cheap bulls paired with random cheap heifers, the first thing I’d do is stop doing that. Again, pelvic measuring works, but so does investing in genetics.
