Thanks for YOUR service! None of us vets down on this level are responsible for what we did or where we went. Enlistees did have a choice of job assignments....maybe. But they still took the luck of the draw on assignments.
But, people mostly realize, I hope, that everything in the military supports everything else. Without the clerks, typists, chaplains assistants, truck drivers, infantry, cooks, medics, etc ,etc, the whole thing would soon grind to a halt. There were 100 of us in our "medic" class @ Ft Sam Houston (San Antonio) in '68. At graduation, 90 of the class had orders for Southeast Asia. 10 of us had orders for Europe. How did that happen? But, at that time, our military presence was big & still building.
I was drafted. My Dad was in WW2 & his lasting advice to me was "don't volunteer for anything....". I didn't. But, I did all the jobs & assignments they gave me well, as I'm sure you did. We both gave our part to "keep the wheels turning".
Those that didn't serve should feel no less worthy. They helped keep the wheels turning at home. In WW2 if a young man was the sole maintainer on a farm, he was asked to stay home & help provide food for the country. Without him/her, the wheels would quit turning.
And finally, again, if anyone throws a salute at me, I return it. I'll initiate salutes to other vets also. |
