East of Broken Bow | I have an iPhone 5, and besides the fingerprint, there is also a 4 digit PIN to unlock it. I think you get 3 tries per hour (or half hour) to guess the PIN, without the phone shutting down.
Press the fingerprint button, then press it again, and the display will bring up the keypad numbers. (if you press the second time too quick you will get siri, if that happens, press the fingerprint button again, then again after waiting a couple seconds).
I know this doesn't help much, but if you have an idea what numbers he may have used for a PIN, you may be able to get it open.
