Subject: RE: calf prices

Beresford, SD
And doing that is exactly why every one in the west is gun shy when "Eastern" cattle are pitched to them by a "trader" I mean broker. Most of the time they went to a "put together station" until a full pot load was assembled and hopefully on the road west before they got stale. Even worse buyer goes to every small sale barn and let's the cattle "stand" there until he has an entire load (maybe at 5-6 barns)....pot picks up purchases of the week and high tails it west and while cattle are on the road the buyer is pitching them stale calves all over.....marking them up $20 over his costs and freight. On paper the feeder thinks he got a bargain at first, until day 5 when thier all sick and the vet just told him they have myco.

Another way eastern cattle get in the west is the feeder and broker are "partnered" up.......usually they are backgrounded 90-120 days and then sold "misrepresented" as western or Iowa green tag specials.........normally sold in the upper 5, low 6 wt range, up to 750. They stick out like sore thumbs at the barn. See more than a few of them around here in Jan/Feb.

Cattle going barn to barn like some of the eastern buying firms due should be illegal!

I've heard many horror stories about eastern calves....amount of time and the environment eastern calves expierence between the producer and the feeder destroys thier reputation.
