Cousin hooked onto rural water this summer.
For his hydrant, he used a (approx.) 6 foot long section of 6 inch PVC pipe and drilled 2 holes at the bottom, across from each other.
He used a "T", 2 short nipples and a cap.
A nipple comes one side , hooks onto T and the other nipple goes out the other side and is capped.
On the top, he used a 6 inch cap and drilled a hole in it for the hydrant to go through.
It looks good and is very solid. If he has to replace the hydrant it might be possible to unscrew the hydrant and put a new one in. (Cap is not glued on.)
