I don't know what happened either. The pictures you sent make it look like nothing more than frost damage. I would think a mechanical failure would have wreaked a whole lot more damage in the cylinder than that. The bottom of the cylinder head didn't even look damaged.

Before you make the long drive, compare oil pumps. I'm assuming your engine had a crank driven oil pump. You are right on the edge of the time when Ford switched from cam to crank driven oil pumps.

I cant tell from the numbers you gave, since they are only casting numbers, but since it's not identical, I would closely check out the oil pump situation. Is this a long block you're looking at? I think with what you have to work with, I'd be getting something that has a crank and rods to go with it. Maybe you'll luck out and be able to simply re-ring it.
