I think your engine may be a bit small for a single stage 17 gpm pump. According to this calculator http://www.phionline.com/calcmain.htm it will take about 26 hp. You may get by with a smaller engine with a little flywheel effect to get thru the tough spots. I don't know of a formula for reservoir size. I think there would be a lot of factors, outside temperature, surface area of tank, etc.. I would guess ten gallons would be adequate.
