I doubt he plants anywhere near 18,000 on his dryland. More like 12,500 if I were to guess. He may have more irrigated than dryland though.

Regardless, I think his point is that 2 weeks of dry weather when the corn is not even knee high, ESPECIALLY if the temps are only in the high 80's is really not the end of the world.

Now at high populations on dryland and if the trend continues, at that point I would be very concerned. This also assumes you're not dry as a bone with the corn struggling already.

Both he and I have seen a LOT of droughted out corn. By that I mean corn that is bad enough that it doesn't pay the harvest bill to cut it.

Everyone talks about pineapple corn at some point in the year. That stuff often does well with a timely rain. No sense killing the crop when it's alive and kicking.
