Subject: RE: Ideas to Stretch/Supplement Pasture

South Dakota
I've never done the supplementing on pasture for two reasons: 1) I don't like the idea of feeding cattle all year long, when they're on pasture they're doing all the work for me 2) I have neighbors that have done this for years and their pastures are really beat up, they've selected for blue grass and it's so compacted that 95% of it never gets above ankle high. His cows do look good and he runs a high stocking rate. He feeds ground conned corn. I use cover crops to extend my grazing. I will graze rye till June 1 and then plant soybeans. I also planted an 80 day silage corn this year. I'm going to chop that in July and then plant a cover crop and graze in September. I'm also growing oats and field pea and then grazing covers there too. I've put crop ground to grazing for the whole year before and it worked well. Additionally, I've got some irrigated pasture the cows are on now. Grazing crop ground is more profitable than crops right now if you own the cows.
