I was in your position 24 years ago on a rented farm. See if you can talk the owners into one or two fans mounted in the end wall and use your portable ones in the 8' door on the hotter days. If you have good genetics and feed and good cow comfort, keeping them cool will pay back quickly.

Make sure the barn is sealed up tight on the fan end and the side walls. try to have 30 sq. feet of air inlet opening per 4' fan. Mount two pieces of plywood on hinges at the top of the 8' door with holes cut out the size of the portable fans so that you dont have air short circuiting around the fans while they are running.

All fans should be blowing the same direction. The only time your use the racetrack setup is in colder weather when you may want to circulate some air in the barn.

what is the height and width of your barn? That will determine how many cfm to need. You may want 3-5mph wind for proper cow cooling and comfort. Make sure you buy quiet fans because on hotter days you will want to be in the barn because it will be the most comfortable place on the farm.
