Lancaster, OH | Just got done watching Secretariat again for maybe the 3rd time. Having had many horses over my lifetime with a couple of truly special ones, that movie causes my eyes to leak a bit.
When you are a horse lover and get one of those really special ones, it's a relationship that is hard to describe. Our last one lived to 20 and died with a twisted intestine. This one loved people and would do bizarre things for a horse--pick up buckets from the handle to swing them, once chased other horses around the ring with a crop in his mouth, nudging our then 5 year old son to walk faster, things like that. We fought laminitis with him brought on by some conformation issues which caused us to have him standing in buckets to soak at times. He took it all.
He thrived on trail rides--he loved the variation to keep his mind busy. Did a 100 miler in Kentucky in '93 and he was a champ at 25 miles a day.
Any other good stories out there?
There goes any credibility I might have had left. | |
