Garland Maine
I have schemed about putting the suction pipe inside a long piece of plastic drain tile with the end capped of course. That would filter out the weeds and trash. I have seen a nylon "sock" or "sleeve" material that you can put around the tile for keeping crud out.

Then to keep it up out of the mud I figured on building a wooden "sled" to push into the pond with the pipe held above it.

If you are thinking about year round use I would think that a submersible well pump would slide right down inside that drain tile. I believe the directions with them usually show how to put them in a pvc sleeve so that the flowing water cools them.

So this is all theoretical as I haven't done it yet.
