NW Central Ohio | ...I'm not sure I understand the "break up the soil" issue. Alfalfa will root as deeply as anything out there. I wouldn't be surprised to find alfalfa roots 10' deep. A tillage radish can't possibly put a root down that fast in the 4-6 months it might grow before it freezes off (Which is another question...do you freeze hard enough to kill turnips and radishes?). If I was looking for something to graze in the fall...Triticale would probably be my choice..with some turnips mixed in for variety. It has a lot of the same rooting qualities of cereal rye..and is probably more productive. | |
