Nunn CO | Hello all,
I was touring around the farm yesterday and found a little bit of a disaster unfortunately. Last fall I planted about 150 acres of winter wheat "in the dust" as a test since it was getting late and we didn't have and rain.... Well that was the wrong choice. Those acres are just lousy with rye (15%-20% guess). The vast majority of the farm I waited till a big rain, pre-worked the ground and seeded. Less the 1% rye.... lesson learned. So, A neighbor said I should consider talking to local diaries, he had them come out in the past and cut it off standing before it went to seed. Is this a common practice? Is there any value in it? Anything I need to expect? to make it more complicated its organic, not sure if Ill be able to take advantage of that or not.
Thanks
Edit: Im about a week from the wheat coming out of the boot.
