I am being facetious regarding recreational marijuana being a possible alternate crop. It is interesting though to see how it has generated so much income and the potential for taxation.
A legitimate third crop that has been advocated for years would be industrial hemp. It is illegal to grow in the U.S.
not to get the thread side tracked but I see it as the valstead act. People are going to use it and making it illegal had done nothing but create Al capones around the world. It's a naturally growing plant. Having said that tho I do not feel the same way about manufactured narcotics even tho cocaine was legal less than 100 years ago.
Illinois set up a registration to grow commercially. 1 grower per state police district. To register was a $25,000 retainer which of you weren't picked you didn't get back. The growers were picked long before the registration. Good ol boy politics.
