8x10 is big enough. Have used 6x12 made from portable panels and it worked, but not the best. I would say 12x12 is huge, but if you have the room, fine.

Need to have a longer pen to pull. Get a headgate before you pay for it in doctor bills & laid up time. I use a pearson auto catch, which has a pipe on each side of neck top to bottom so that if cow goes down, she is still ok. I open headgate all the way, cow enters that area through the headgate. Then i set it to catch her as she turns around and decides to leave. Mine doesn't auto catch real well, so i have a rope to pull to shut the headgate as she is going into it. Have a panel on one side that is straight out that can be swung around next to her if she is wanting to tear around. Panel on her left side is always there. If she wants to kick, a post top back a few feet avaiable to make a hitch 1/ 2 hitch to with a rope tied to her right foot. Tie the footback past straight down, but so she can still stand on it.
