SW Ohio | surprised some dairy folks didn't respond to this one, we had Jerseys and they get milk fever at the drop of a hat. Classic symptoms---"S" curve in the neck, cold ears, dry nose, poor muscle control, low temps, almost always occurs just as milk production is ramping up, due to the body scavenging all the calcium it can to put into the milk, can also be related to mineral imbalances with K and Mg. Mild cases will respond well to oral boosters, mid cases need an IV, done very slowly because it will shock the heart, severe cases multiple IV's, and sub Q. | |
