SW WI | After reading your post a couple of times I understand your starting from scratch for your feeding area? At first I thought you wanted some ideas for fastening rail or pipe to wood that sits on a curb. Here's a few to give you some more idea.
Pic 1 is how my pipe is on 6x6s in my newer barn. As you can see the bolts go all the way thru the 6x6 to the hanger. I didn't want the pipe on the inside. I thought that would make it hard for 300 lb calves to reach the feed. On the other hand I'm not sure if I would want a full line of 1400 lb cattle pushing out the way it is. I sell my cattle at 900 lbs so I've been alright.
Pic 2&3 is my covered feed area on a converted dairy barn. As you can see, the pressure the cattle put on the pipe presses right into the railroad ties.
Pic 4 are from an uncovered feeding lane. When I first purchased this farm, it had railroad ties instead of the 4" pipe. What a disaster, they would rot off right at ground level and you couldn't get the rotten stub out. We have terrible clay here. Finally got them all out and replaced with 4" pipe cemented in.
