I think you are correct, First the 40-50 herds went, then it was the 80-200 that contracted, now it appears it might take a minimum of a 1000 cows unless you inherit a farm. The goal generally is to provide for your family, live a decent life style, and try to put something away for retirement. A lot of dairy farmers don't go broke but their dairy doesn't provide for the criteria I just mentioned.
