all over Iowa
Two easy calculations for you:
Haylage - what is comparable dry hay going for in your area? Make the moisture adjustment and go. So, dry 18% CP alfalfa hay at $100/ton, divide by 86% (normal dry matter) to get it to 100% dry matter and then multiply by 35% (haylage dry matter) to get adjusted price of $40.70 per ton.
Corn silage is 10X #2 corn price at 35% dry matter. There are 10 times more calories in a ton of as fed silage than there is in a bushel of corn. This is fair to the one that grew and harvested it (equal or better profit per acre) and the cattleman buying it as feed.
