Lancaster, OH | Seed genetic advancement in yield has been very consistent--just under 2 bushels/year.
We've seen faster advancement in harvested bushels through better management. That management includes the incorporation of yield protecting traits along with other grower practices. In addition, I believe that we are working harder at genetic placement than many years ago.
Many hybrids have had 200-300-400 bushel yield potential if we could manage the plant's needs.
One indicator of the management factor in extracting yield potential is to look at soybeans. Soybean genetic gain has also been consistent over the years at about 1/2-3/4 bushel/year. However, we have not put the management into soybeans for higher yields and have not seen the harvested yield advancement. | |
