Subject: RE: Guess row question

Princeton, Indiana
From many years of growing 2-row small plot corn breeding yield trials we learned a few things about guess rows. When guess row inaccuracy exceeded +/- 2" it began to affect the yield of the 2-row plot on either side of the guess row. When guess rows were 28" or closer, yield began to decrease. When guess rows were 32" or greater, yields began to increase.

There is only so much soil, moisture and sunlight in an acre to support plant growth. It seems that there is no free lunch. Row width and in-row spacing both affect plant stress and therefore yield. A planter width setting of 19.5' will give result in a 24" guess row and all other things being equal, both rows on either side of the narrow space will most likely have a slightly reduced yield. The overall field average yield would probably be the same as if all guess rows were planted to an accurate 30" spacing. Just my guess.

Growing tall hybrids next to shorter hybrids in a 2-row plot arrangement really causes some head scratching results but that's a whole other topic-:)
