Near-north Ontario, French River | 100 bu doesn't take much more management than 60bu wheat. In our area the big thing seems to be soil type, clays/clay loams if well drained can consistently hit the 90-100 range, sandy soils or un-tiled heavy clay will struggle though as the crop either runs out of water in June ( sandy ground) or suffers winter kill or drowning on the heavy un-tiled ground. I've personally hit +100 three times in last 7 years, with no real "intensive management", Plant early ( anytime after sept 20 fly-free date) , get my N ( UAN @ 90lbs N ) on in late April/early May,and spray a fungicide at 75% heading. Have toyed with the idea of bumping N rates, and using growth regulators to shorten up straw but so far weather has co-operated to allow proper timing. |
