South Dakota
We've got the same culture in South Dakota, but it is true that most of SD doesn't need lime. SDSU had taught me that lime wasn't really a concern in our state, but then I started working in retail ag and found out they are wrong. Mostly for us there are small pockets that need it, but the areas are growing more and more. These higher yields we are getting is leading to higher nitrogen application, which has led to lower ph, mostly in pockets along I 29. Also, we have seen a huge amount of tile go in during the last decade, which has lowered ph immensely. I think people just don't recognize that their ph has dropped during their careers. If it was me, I wouldn't go into the custom app cause I'd think the coops would push you out. The farmers already buying fertilizer from the coop, when the coop figures out people want lime, they'll get the sale. That's my opinion.
