Subject: JD 4650 MFWD front end question (steering cylinders)

I just bought a 1983 JD 4650 with front wheel assist. I was greasing it the other day and noticed a broken bolt at the end of one of my steering cylinders. One of my friends was looking at the tractor and told me his 4960 didn't have steering cylinders. He said his front end just has the the tie rods and is pretty much the same other than the cylinders. What are these for? It seems to steer fine even with the bolt broken in the one cylinder. Just curious. Thanks.
