I'm not the agronomist that some are here but I think the N in AMS is not available for a considerable amount of time after applied. It might be too late to do any good if it doesn't break down for three or four weeks.
Past 3 years I've topdressed with urea and 50 - 100 pound of AMS believing the N in the AMS will be available about tassel time.
