Fast growing cover crops that stay ahead of and smoother weeds are sorghum sudan, sunn hemp, radish, cowpeas. Since you are going to corn having a radish and a legume is preferred for both scavenging left over N and producing some for next years crop. Sorghum sudan residue would help with erosion through planting next year
