Trying to run a planter in 4' tall stalks stinks, so i wouldn't go that far. But i like to chop everything that pass the stalk rolls but leave bottom standing in no-till, or actually strip till. If you leave stalks all in one piece either in the air or on the ground 1. they will never break down, 2 you will fight hair pinning in the seed trench when they get driven over and they will.

Strip till 30" soybeans are really best of both worlds. These are as long as our stalks get anymore in standing corn, down or gooseneck corn is whole different story but what can you do but deal with it.
