You have some well thought out reasons to switch and it wouldn't be that big of a change from what you are already doing.

6. You are setup well. Most years you could early cut & wrap alfalfa and still have time to plant corn too!
7. Yes you will probably want to run a little shorter alfalfa hay rotation of 2-3 year and then corn. Not much N in a burnt out alfalfa field.

1. Go with 12 row, especially if you think you want to expand past the 80. There isn't much cost difference on used planters between the two. Guidance is great for cultivating. You will not be able to accurately plant and then come back to cultivate with tractor guidance only. You will need active implement guidance on the planter & cultivator to work well. For me, the extra cost wasn't worth it. Look into a manual guidance hitch with feeler wands. If you want to upgrade to implement steering in the future, some are able to do that too. Just having perfectly straight planted rows makes cultivating much better!
2. K sulfate or even KCl can be used as long as its mined and no prohibited dust control or things like that added.
3. Yes you can use equipment for both. Must have a documented clean out procedure and follow it.

Yes you are crazy, but in a good way, lol.
