I could be wrong, but I think I remember when the 8900 series came out they advertised an available option with smaller front tires (and probably different gears somewhere) to allow for tighter turning.
I'm not answering directly to the orginal post, just a random comment to the conversation on how to make a boxcar turn shorter.
