Definitely clamp fuel cooler hose at front. Just open grill and fold hose as said above. Stops the air circulating. I usually leave the square filter loose at the top until air is out and a few more pumps after that.
You could also have a bit of junk blocking the fitting where the fuel pipe leaves the tank if you ran it out, or that may be the reason you were changing filter.
