They had some coated seed about 12 years ago in South Dakota and it was supposed to melt the coating off when the ground temp was at a certain degree. Well the seed was planted in march and the soil temps varied so bad across the field that some corn was spiking and the other was sprouting. I was a great idea at the time but just never worked.
